Whether you're just starting out in the modeling world or updating your book, preparing for a model portfolio shoot can feel overwhelming. The good news? With the right preparation, your shoot can be both empowering and enjoyable — and result in strong, versatile images that get you noticed.

Tips from a professional model portfolio photographer in Cape Town. As a model portfolio photographer in Cape Town, I’ve worked with dozens of models and agencies to create striking, authentic portfolios. Here's what you need to know before stepping in front of the camera.
1. Know Your Goals (and Who You’re Shooting For)
Before we start shooting, get clear on why you're building your portfolio:
Are you submitting to agencies?
Are you refreshing your book with new looks?
Do you need specific commercial or editorial styles?
Let me know in advance so I can tailor the shoot to meet your goals — whether that means keeping things clean and natural or adding more creative edge. → Model Portfolio Photography
2. Choose Versatile Outfits That Highlight You
What you wear matters — but it shouldn’t overshadow you. For most test shoots, less is more. Here’s what works well:
Neutral colors (white, black, grey, denim)
Simple pieces that show your silhouette
Minimal patterns or branding
Fitted basics: tank tops, jeans, bodycon dresses, etc.
Bring 2–3 outfit options, including one full-body look and one more styled option. If you're unsure, I’m happy to guide you on wardrobe before the shoot.
3. Keep Hair and Makeup Clean and Natural
Agencies and brands want to see you, not heavy makeup or overly styled hair. Unless your shoot calls for a specific creative look:
Keep makeup minimal — clean skin, defined lashes, natural lips
Hair can be down, pulled back, or styled simply
Avoid heavy foundation, glitter, or dramatic eyeliner
If needed, we can book a professional makeup artist or stylist (optional).
4. Take Care of the Basics (They Matter)
The camera picks up everything — so take care of these little details before your shoot:
Nails: clean, trimmed, or neutral polish
Skin: hydrate, avoid sunburn or harsh treatments right before
Sleep: a well-rested face makes a huge difference
Eat light before the shoot so you feel good and energized
Pro tip: bring water and lip balm to your shoot.

5. Practice in the Mirror (Yes, Really)
Confidence in front of the camera takes practice. Before your shoot:
Learn your angles — which side feels strongest?
Practice expressions — relaxed face, soft smile, fierce stare
Try a few standing and sitting poses
Don’t worry if you’re new — I’ll guide you throughout the session. But practicing even a little beforehand helps you feel more relaxed and natural.
6. Trust the Process and Enjoy the Shoot
Your energy matters. When you feel comfortable and supported, it shows. My goal is to create a relaxed space where you can be yourself — no forced smiles or awkward poses.
Together, we’ll create images that not only look great, but feel real.
