CORE Kiteboarding needed coverage of their athletes across Red Bull King of the Air 2024 at Kite Beach — two days of big air competition in Cape Town's south-easter. The brief was athlete-focused: document CORE riders through heats, on the beach between sessions, and through to the podium. I shot across both competition days as a solo operator, working from the beach and water's edge to cover the full range — air sequences, launch and landing moments, team reactions, and the women's and men's podium celebrations that closed the event.

King of the Air is a waiting game punctuated by short windows where everything happens at once. I positioned on the beach for competition time, working a long lens to separate riders against the sky — the container ship horizon, the Lion's Head silhouette in the haze, the late-afternoon sun burning through the Atlantic spray. The beach moments required a different read: staying close enough to get the raw reactions when riders came out of the water, but loose enough not to interfere. The women's podium at dusk — trophy raised, South African flag behind, champagne flying — was the frame that closed both days.
