HYROX Cape Town at the CTICC is one of the largest fitness racing events in South Africa — thousands of athletes, eight workout stations, and a crowd that stays loud for the full day. Virgin Active, as title partner, needed comprehensive photo coverage across the workout floor, run course, finish line, and post-race moments: images that could work across their own channels and the broader event media needs. One day, one operator, 100 images covering the full event from first heat to last finisher.

HYROX inside the CTICC is a mixed-light challenge — overhead fluorescents, stage lighting, and almost no natural light. I shoot it at high ISO and prioritise shutter speed to freeze movement on the sled and ski erg, then dial back for the slower, more controlled stations like rowing where a touch of motion can work. The venue's mirror walls are genuinely useful — the wall ball station gives you an infinite-regression effect without any setup. I move between stations constantly, timing arrivals to catch athletes at the point of maximum effort rather than the reset between reps. Crowd and supporter frames get worked in between station rotations; the energy in the spectator corridor is as much a part of the event as what's happening on the floor.
