— The brief

Cape Town's Atlantic seaboard runs hard in summer — south-easter, heavy shore break, cold water. I've been shooting watersports here since I moved to the city, and this is where most of my personal work happens. Windsurfing, wingfoiling, surfing — three disciplines, one coastline, conditions that don't forgive hesitation. These images are from sessions across 2025 and 2026, shot for my own archive and to show what's possible when the Cape Doctor shows up.

— The scope

Personal work across multiple sessions, 2025–2026. Disciplines covered:

— Windsurfing: big-wave conditions, wave riding and jumping, Atlantic shore break

— Wingfoiling: beach launch sequences, foiling through surf, Table Mountain backdrop

— Surfing: shortboard and longboard, reef and beach break across Cape Town spots

No brief, no client. Shot on my own time to keep the portfolio sharp and stay close to the water.

— The approach

Watersports photography in Cape Town requires knowing the conditions before they arrive. The south-easter builds fast — what looks manageable at 08:00 is a full gale by noon. I position from the shore, working with long glass to compress the action against the wave face or sky, and time sessions around the light rather than around convenience. The flat-water freestyle work required a different read: short windows between gusts, athletes in the air for fractions of a second. Most of these frames came from sessions where I was already in the water or on the beach for my own training — which is the only way to know where to stand.

— Delivered

A working archive of Cape Town watersports imagery across three disciplines — available for licensing or as reference for brands considering a shoot in Cape Town. If you work in windsurfing, wingfoiling, surfing, or adjacent watersports and are planning content in Cape Town, this is the kind of work I produce.
