HYROX Cape Town 2026 was hosted by Virgin Active at a sold-out indoor venue, with thousands of athletes competing across singles, doubles, relays, and pro divisions over the race weekend. I shot the event for Virgin Active — full-day photo coverage of competition action, athlete portraits between heats, brand activation, and crowd energy.
HYROX is the world's fastest-growing fitness racing format — eight 1km runs interleaved with eight functional workout stations (sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, sandbag lunges, wall balls, farmers carry, ski erg). The challenge for event photography is covering all of it: athletes are in motion across a large floorplan, the workouts run simultaneously, and the brand activation environment matters as much as the action itself for the marketing brief.

Event coverage at this scale is single-day, single-operator, no second chances. Six hours of constant movement, switching between editorial portrait grade and tight action work, then 200+ edits delivered to the brand within 5 working days.

How I work fitness event coverage
Fitness event coverage is a different discipline from editorial sports work. The athlete moves you can't repeat. The crowd reactions you can't stage. The sponsor activations need to be captured at the moments they hit peak attendance. As a single operator, I plan the day around the event schedule, not the other way around.

Yes. Originally German, based in Cape Town since 2022. I shoot in EUR-invoiced workflows, deliver remotely via Dropbox, and travel internationally for fitness event coverage. Production schedules with international organisers are familiar.
Do you handle the athlete release/usage rights workflow?
Yes. For paid event photography, athletes typically grant usage as part of registration; sponsor and brand activation usage is covered under the event's commercial agreements. I work within the rights structure provided by the event organiser and can advise on standard practices for fitness events.
Can you shoot both the competition floor and brand activation?
Yes. HYROX events have multiple sponsor environments running simultaneously with the competition. Single-operator coverage means switching between editorial action and brand activation environments throughout the day, with consistent visual treatment across both.
